My name is Katie Carroll, and I am an eighteen year old jazz singer in Carmel, California. I have been lucky enough to attend the Monterey Jazz Festival’s summer jazz camp for the past three years, and, thanks to the Kiatta family, will be attending for my fourth year starting on June 18th. I received a full scholarship in memory of their daughter, Hydeus Kiatta, who passed away due to stage 4 colon cancer at the much-too-young age of 34. From everything I have read and heard about her, she seems like the type of woman I would like to become: creative, intelligent, passionate, and loving.
I hope that this blog, in which I will follow my jazz camp journey, will provide an outlet for me to show just how much this family’s gift means to me.
